Our second season is well underway with our 8 new players having found their place into our team.

Six games into our season playing in LIWSA D3, the team are coming off of a convincing victory at Oak Bay High that left all the players smiling! The game was as good as any women's game we have seen this season. Lots of ball movement, lots of first to the ball, four wonderful goals. The coaching staff managed their deep bench with timely substitutions. Just a great game to watch!

Our next game is versus one of last seasons tougher teams: VicWest. Then the team has to get used to playing on grass with games at SaltSpring and Peninsula.

One thing we have noticed this season is that the level of play is generally higher than last season and more parity.  Bays United is definitely a better team than their place in the standings indicates. And we know how VicAs has repeatedly stifled our team. Ladysmith is another team that plays a very defensive game and are taking points off of their opponents! We wont see them till November 17th at Braefoot Park.

2017/18 D3 season

One month today we start up our new season preparations!

What happened over the summer?

As we all knew Fernwood was promoted to D2, Saltspring declined the second D2 spot but VicWest asked for (and received) the spot while at the same time registering a new D3 team (or did they?). That could mean we are in for a 12 team D3 this season but we really wont know for certain till the new schedule comes out mid August.

as 2016/17 season ends time to think about 2017/18...

The 2016/17 season officially ended for Lakehill D3 on April 29th team members met at 1550s for a season end event sponsored by the club and the team officials! A great time was had by all and  Coach Peter thanked the players for their efforts on their first season together as a team! The red and white stripes finished LIWSA D3 in 4th spot not far off a promotion spot.

 

Now it is time to start planning for next season! The core of the team wants to kick the ball around starting in mid May and the Manager is working on that , if anyone is interested contact him by email

With an eye towards 2017/18 season the plan is to add 3 or 4 players and compete for promotion to Div 2. Plan is to keep the player fees as low as possible (likely $275/season) and start preseason training in late July. The aim for next season is to once again have Friday night home games at Braefoot Turf/Grass (likely 8pm kick offs). We have asked the club for Monday/Wednesday practices 8-9pm at Braefoot. We will also be building into the team plan more indoor sessions as those proved to be popular especially during the cold weather we experienced in 2016/17.

LIWSA 2016/17 season standings

Another successful LIWSA women's Soccer season comes to an end and its time for our annual reflection! Starting with the top "premier" division.
 Not surprisingly Castaways finished top of the Premier with the wealth of talent they had. What was more surprising was the strong second place showing from Victoria As.. Something no one would have predicted based on last seasons showing!

New entrants to the Premier division where Nanaimo United who dominated D1 last season did respectable while perennial powerhouse PLSC dropped to third. If you are looking for a team wearing stripes you would not find either Lakehill or Gorge in "Prem" this season.. a sad reality of the difficulty some teams have in finding players of that caliber!

Instead Lakehill could be found in LIWSA D1-D3 and for the first season in a long memory all three teams finished in their respective top 4! A great achievement!

 Gorge D1 (which was last years Prem team) lost some key players to Lakehill D1 and D2 teams and was effectively a new team without an experienced midfield. The team did feature some Lakehill developed players and despite the points tally they did finish strong in Cup play. Lakehill D1 showed a significant improvement on last seasons D1 result while long time leaders VicWest FC dropped 6 spots from last season!

Question in D1 and D2 is, who wants to go "up" a division? PLSC earned promotion to Premier while in D2 it was Lakehill Reds who finished top of the table. Under LIWSA rules both can decline promotion since their clubs already have a team in the higher division. Only teams who finish top 4 can challenge for promotion. So we will have to wait and see who is interested in playing in a higher division next season!

Every season two teams get promoted from Div3 to Div2, and this season it was both Fernwood and SaltSpring who finished 1st and 2nd in D3 to earn promotion to D2. The Saanich CELOSEN team "folded' from D2 at Xmas and will not be in D3 next season while Peninsula (PSA) will be dropped to play in D3 next season.

This season saw a few returning teams and a few new teams in Div 3.

 Our Lakehill D3s coached by PeterD was a brand new team and featured 14 'developed at lakehill' players and a cross section of ages from 1981s to 1999s. The team aimed to play a strong ground game rather than the often exercised 'kick and run' that many D3 teams deployed.  Finishing fourth in their first season was a great indicator of the future potential for this team! The Coach and Manager look forward to next season and hope all players will return! We have already had inquiries from graduating u18s and look to field a strong team looking to earn promotion to Div 2 in the 2017/18 campaign!

This seasons Lower Island Womens Div3 division has been very competitive at the top half of the standings! As we enter the final 4 games of the season there is a three team battle to secure the second Div2 promotion spot. Fernwood City with their undefeated record are destined to play in Div2 next season. Whoever wins the VicWest-Lakehill battle this Sunday will be well poised to give SaltSpring a run to the final decision.




It has been a great season for the new Lakehill team but the team has seen more than ins fair share of injuries and hope to have a healthy roster in time for the Leversedge Cup run starting against Lakehill Over30s on Friday Feb 17th at Braefoot Park.
