Guest Gaffer's Game 9 report...
ManCity's Manager is the source of our lakehill-gorge report ;)"Ideally we would have preferred maximum points, but there are lessons to be learned and we need to recognize there are areas we need to improve"
ManCity *also* drew their opponents today. And we fully understand how that can be! After coming off of two tough losses the players knew what they had to do today. They could not call on their Captain or any of their other missing players, instead they had to go out and play like they are capable of. For Gorge a tie felt like a win, their keeper was full credit for their point today, the Reds peppered 20 shots at the Gorge end but with no power in our shots we made it easy for the Gorge today! Granted the slick turf meant a lot of balls out of play today. Our lack of quality ball control sure showed! Most frustrating is our continued inability to score on corners. Once again we had great delivery into (and out) of the box...sigh!
We do have to say that there were more than a few positives in todays game:
- Defensive strength: Gorge had ZERO shots on Mia today! Mia was a bit bored back there but had some nice goalie kicks... thank you Mia!
- better use of the fields width: SarahT and Kristina worked well on the left side!
- Alicia continues to drop excellent balls into the box on Corners ..sadly we don't put them into the goal!
- Soleil had a blistering shot that just went wide of its mark
- Zoe worked and worked and worked...like the Energizer she is!!
- Paige, Annabel, Kirsten = well done in the centre of the park, and up front!
- Mina once again demonstrated great willingness to play the air balls getting a nice header in the second half!!!
- Hailey, SarahN,Melina were very reliable on defense, I did say Gorge had ZERO shots on our net today didn't I?
We hope EVERYONE makes Tuesday and Thursday's practices! Check your emails on Monday!

Sunday in Nanaimo...
UPDATE:
Our reporter at the Sunday match tells us that UVI dominated large stretches of the play and a Penalty (somehow involving Reds' Austyn) had a bearing on the UVI goal!
The two island u14G Metro teams go head to head! This will be Victoria's chance to get a second league win and leapfrog Upper Island in the standings! Should be exciting to watch! Noon kick off at Merle Logan field! We wish "Reds-Guest- Player": Austyn, a great game!!

teams entered in B Cup playdown
This will be our first year entered in provincial qualifying Cup play! The format basically is single elimination, the more you win the further you go, first you need to win the district then against Upper Island (Comox again?)then you qualify for the provincials! Sounds easy? no, its not! But anything is possible! The teams that don't qualify out of Victoria go on to the District Cup (Won by JdF last year in our age group). Who plays who? A random drawing is done later this year/early next year. Since we have 7 teams competing this season it is likely a preliminary round will be required to get it down to 6 teams! Should be fun!

from now till the break...
6 weeks left till the winter break. Most teams have at least one make up game which many will schedule in for November 11th. Of the games scheduled so far here is how the next six weeks look for teams and their opponents:
Peninsula(6+1) : CVSA, GHCB, BU, GHCB, LH, Gorge, CVSA
GHCB (6+1) : BU, PSA, LH, PSA, Gorge, CVSA, BU
BaysU (6+3) : GHCB, PSA, Gorge, CVSA, LH, GHCB
Gorge (5+1) : LH, CVSA, BU, GHCB, PSA, LH
CVSA (5) : PSA, Gorge, LH, BU , GHCB, PSA
Lakehill (5) : Gorge(H), GHCB(A), CVSA(H), PSA(H), BU(A), Gorge(A)
A look at the LISA u14GG schedule on any given weekend indicates anything is possible! Both PSA and GHCB will see each other twice over two weeks so that makes for an interesting dynamic! A lot depends on who can stay healthy! Field conditions will also see some teams having to scramble to schedule games...oh and...Night Basketball League also starts soon and that may impact some teams! Stay tuned! Luckily we have no trip to Duncan scheduled till the New Year! + Nov 7 Bays-GHCB game was cancelled due to field closure

Guest Coach: Matt Pelle
Many thanks to Matt Pelle of the Victoria Highlanders for being our Tuesday night 'u14G Guest Coach'
The players enjoyed Matt's drills inparticular his 'Tottenham drills'. Matt also worked on our corners, we continue to get great delivery into the box from Alicia, Paige and Zoe but we need to work on finishing those great opportunities!
If you want Matt to run more drills ask:Mario for details on how to attend the weekly Sunday evening Lakehill Soccer Academy!

Braefoot Park Turf Grass..

Now that we have an Artifical Turf field at Braefoot Park one of the most common questions we hear is "what is in the field?" As the photo shows the grass is 50mm of Polyethylene fibres. between the fibres is lots and lots of sand and rubber!
So now when you walk over the field.... you know the answer!

Further Perspective - the '94s
click image to enlargenLast week we posted a retrospective look at last years '95s and how the standings changed between their u14 and our current ('96s) u14 year. Today we look at how the '94s have fared between u14 and their current u16 season. This is a very interesting age group that was/[still is] deep in talent!
If you look at the top two teams at March 2008 you would have found the CB'94s and GHSA both ended their season with an amazing 44 points and amassed 14 wins in 16 games! More amazing still is that combined they scored over 142 goals and only conceeded 21 (when you combine both teams!)!!!
Then came a decision by players [mainly from both CB and GH] to join Metro at u15. A decision which has resulted in the current LISA Metro u16s having a tremendous season!
What has that meant for the calibre of Gold league play? A look at the standings shows that Gorge who did not lose that many players to Metro benefited and have been the dominant power in '94s soccer the last two seasons. We watched the team at the Lakehill Girls Fall Classic and they are very very good! Solid in all positions and play a nice flowing style of football!
One would think that CB who did lose players would have been seriously weakened but that has not been the case, they had an excellent season last year in what was a 94/93 division coming in 3rd. While at the same time GHSA was depleted by Metro. This season with the partnership between CB and GH the CB squad has been strengthened and continues to push Gorge in a very competitive league. At the same time one has to point out that teams like Lakehill have also been able to strengthen with each passing season, possibly thanks to the Reynolds CSE.
The down side is that the steady erosion of teams with each passing season. Back in 2007/2008 LISA '94 Golds had 8 teams, then 7 and now down to just 6. Worse yet the current '95s only have 4 teams in their Gold division! Whats the solution? go to dual year divisions? u18, u16, u14, u12 as is the case in the UK? We are not sure...but as we see in the '96s age group, we are down to 6 teams this year and if the trend continues we will likely EVEN see fewer '96s teams in subsequent seasons!

The Gaffer's game 8 report
"Well, it's Hallowe'en after all ...trick or treat!"
"...we knew the threat Bays posed with their "ping, run and gun" style."
"Credit to Bays, they were first to the ball and made the game difficult for us."
"After their goals we got ourselves back on track and started playing as we can, Alicia was getting good balls into the box but we could not connect."
"We battled hard against a good side, did not give up much in the midfield but lacked the extra something to go ahead, on their fourth goal the linesman did not get it right but the game was gone by then."
"It's about picking up points. Bays got the points and a victory".
"Bays #7 is a talented player."
"Well done Lakehill and in particular Kristina up front - worked her socks off and got a well deserved goal!" That she did on a nice through ball from Montana!
We hope OV will not be out long, she will be getting the knee checked out!

UPDATE: What actually happened was a tightening of the top 4 in the u14 division! All eyes will be on the three make up games starting with the GH/PSC game and Bays have yet to play PSC!
...another interesting weekend of LISA u14G Gold games!
Depending on how the ball bounces we could see a new division leader and more distance between the top 4 teams... good luck everyone!

Hallowe'en Practice!
Wednesday, October 28, 2009
if you are sick....stay home!
It's a good thing we have a 'deep bench' this season! We have yet to have a game where all our players have made a game! Despite the obvious line juggling challenges that would bring with it the coaches warn that if you are not 100% please stay home, your health is way more important! In fact the coaches will always accept (at least) two reasons for not making a practice/game: Your School Work and your Health (in either order!)They just ask that you give as much notice as you possibly can, let the coaches or Robert know!
As for this weekends home game vs BaysU, we know that due to the rowing regatta and the current wave of illness' many players will be absent, again, your health and previous commitments are more important--even if it means missing this BIG game ;) Just let the coaches know in advance and not an hour before the game---please! As for game location = Reynolds Park!!

Some perspective...
A look at how the 2008/2009 U14 Division [in a 5 team division] ended and compare with the pace which this years u14's are setting (in a 6 team division)....it's starting to look very similar and only 7 games have been played so far this season!! A big difference between this and last season is the club/team names are not in the same spots! But there are still 8+ games to play (before cup play) and a lot 'could' (and likely will) happen...
stay tuned!

week 7... three shutouts...
...this weekends action saw some predictable results (and a strange Yellow card handed out at GHCB) that made the race to the top very tight! Factor in the unplayed games from October 24th and next weekends battle between Lakehill and BaysU, this could turn out to have been a pivotal weekend! Peninsula remains the only undefeated team! But PSC and GHCB still have a game to make up (11.11.09@Lochside) and the way both teams are playing a draw is very likely! There is a lot of parity between 1st and 4th this season and on any given weekend anything is possible, it comes down to how you train and how energized you are to play! See you on Tuesday at Braefoot #2 and on the Turf for Thursday's practice!

The Gaffer's Game Report...
"We deserved something out of it, that's for sure."
"We played pretty well in the first half and I thought we might see that one through."
"It was a great game. The two sides were at each other, there were plenty of chances, plenty of goal-mouth stuff and all credit to the two teams."
"tough to lose that way, but that's the way the ball deflects"
"From our own point of view, it was a good performance, there's a bit of disappointment that we didn't manage to win it let alone earn a point from it"
"it was a battle"

It's going to be Huge!

Once you get to Grade 12 your club soccer options will change! Women's soccer is extremely competitive and also demanding. Many more teams and clubs and some very strong competition! Lakehill Soccer is very fortunate to have multiple teams in the various divisions that make up the LOWER ISLAND WOMEN'S SOCCER ASSOCIATION (oh and there is no TRANSFER rule ;) If you get a chance to watch one of these games you will be treated to some excellent soccer! Have a look at the three games listed below:
*

above: Div 2 standings listed at www.liwsa.com
*
This Friday will see a great Lakehill FC Premier Womens game at the new Braefoot Turf between top ranked PLSC-Premier which has 5 former Lakehill Youth players in their line up (including Comptons Trainer KatH)! This should be a very well played game!PREMIER LEAGUE:
Fri., Oct 23 8:00 pm Braefoot Home: Lakehill FC -vs- Prospect Lake
*
meanwhile.....
On Sunday November 1st at noon try to take in one of these two Div2 games! Lakehill is lucky to have two great teams in Division 2 Womens: the LAKEHILL THUNDER and the LAKEHILL REDS (our namesake ;).
Both teams have u18 players in their lineups so watching these teams is a treat to see how competitive our youth players are! The Lakehill Thunder are undefeated (so far) this season and go against the heavily favoured Bays United team! While the Blenkinsop Derby with CBSA Spitfires promises to be another well played turf game! Both of these matches are going to be excellent games and well worth watching!
DIVISION 2:
Sun., Nov 01 12:00 pm at Windsor Home: Bays United -vs- Lakehill Thunder
Sun., Nov 01 12:00 pm at Lochside Home: Cordova Bay Spitfires -vs- Lakehill Reds
*
Good luck to all our Lakehill Womens and Girls teams!
*
In youth soccer, all our girls teams are having a great season (so far)! The u16G Golds are currently tied at the top of their division.

Poor Doncaster! *updated*
Despite having (former UVIC player:) Liz Hansen in the lineup (who scored the equalizer early on) the Doncaster Belles had a tough game!*
Weekend results:
*
Meanwhile on the local scene, the UVIC Vikes played on THEIR new Turf field last weekend and came up with a nil-nil. The Lakehill Premier Women notched up a 1-nil and the two Div 2s came away with convincing victories! Lakehill men came up witha 2-2 vs Gorge in Div 1 play while the u21s demonstrated a convincing 5-2 over Gorge u21. The match of the day was the Lakehill 0ver50 men with a clinical 5-1 over VicWest ! During the weekend our sister team, the u16G Golds stayed top of their charts with a good result vs cross town rivals CBSA! Our u17, u16, u14 Gold Boys (with EmilyA!) are all top of their divisions, but the season is still young!!
*
In what must have been a thrilling Sunday match between Victoria LISA Capitals u14G Metros and North Shore Caps, a total of five balls crossed the goal line! Sadly once again the Victoria team came up a goal short and they fall to a 1-1-3 record on the season. They certainly are competitve this season! In other action the u15 and u16G Metro girls are both at the top or very near to the top of their divisions!
Our Lakehill "Tourney Guest" player from Stan V Wright lane: Austyn must have had a great game for UVI u14G as they crept up the u14G metro standings with a 3-2 win over Abbotsford Mariners on the weekend! They are now even with Victoria having played a game less. Austyn and team mates (many who played on the 2008 VI Zone BC Summer games team) only have one scheduled game vs the Victoria LISA Capitals on November 7th at Merle Logan field , too bad its a Saturday UVI Home game :(
*
School soccer is coming to an end soon, on the Boys scene our Braefoot Turf co-tenants: Reynolds played a great game against Claremont and came up a bit short on the results side.
Many of our players are still involved in Middle school soccer or CAIS. We know that both GNS and the Cedar Hill Soccer teams are having great seasons! Next year many of the players hope to get into the Reynolds CSE!

"We can definitely compete. We've a lot of good players in the team and it was a great effort against a big physical team. My view is that anybody who can put their imprint on a game will pick up points."
"We finally got our third goal and I believe it was a fair result. I still believe we need to work on corners. We are very consistent defensively and we showed some strong passing today."
"We asked the team for a good performance and 100% commitment and in the long run if you do play with that you should get good results.
"The performance was encouraging and I can only tell the players to continue."
"We are always pleased when our team does not respond to a 'kick and a run' with their own! The players did very well on a small field today"
"Did you see Mia's save, that one ball was sailing high and she got to it! Did you see that? Nice save!"
"It was a hand ball for all to see except the one person who missed it"
"Sure makes up for the game vs Comox u14"
"And wearing stripes today ShSoPa" (we think she is Greek...Opa!)
"If there was a weak player in stripes today I certainly did not see it"
we absolutely agree!

Weekend Summary
Our third visit to the Girls Fall Classic started and ended with some excellent play! In between we discovered that we still need to work! That's not meant as a criticism, just as an observation!
The opening half vs the Yellow `Fusion`from Lochside+Tyndal was some excellent soccer. The second half , well, less good! The game vs ComoX/1 was frankly a `stinker`and one we will all want to forget (but maybe we shouldn`t!) It is a bad sign in any game when the forwards have to come back to be defenders! Every player has two jobs on the pitch! If you are not attacking you are defending *within the area of your position*!You redeemed yourself well in your match to the Comox u15s, still some mistakes but the effort that was lacking against CV/1 was definitely there! In your last tourney game you came out wanting to play! Again there were moments of brilliance in between flashes of confusion, luckily there was more of the `good stuff` vs Jdf u15s and you ended the weekend on a 2W-2L record!
Coach Derek appreciates your continued commitment and to reward you he is giving you Tuesday off
Just want to shout out to the goal scorers: Paige (1st goal on the new turf!), Mina, Alicia off of a well struck corner kick, Kristina (great great game, she does like the turf!) and Olivia (she waited a long time for that goal!)
Thanks to everyone! Special thanks to Melina from the sidelines..we hope to have our defensive duo of SarahN and Melina back for the game in Duncan as Katie & Zoe both want to get off of the back line! PS: two nice goal line saves from our #9!

finishing >>the field<<....
The last week at Braefoot Park Turf has been absolutely amazing! We went from a field that had turf carpet laid out on top of an underpad that still needed to be swapped out and in a short time we meet our intended target of Friday's opening of the annual Girls Fall Classic with a u14G game! Special thanks to head installer Dave from DTT of Montana for all the incredible effort from his team! It was well worth the daily 9am coffee runs to Timmies!

did you think the lines were already delivered in the carpet?

above: Friday 4pm, one last load of Sand!

above: Friday 4:50pm, shortly after u17G coach: Bruce scores the first goal on the new turf, Club President and u14G Coach: Derek scores the 2nd goal! He was followed a short time later by Paige and Mina (!)
Initial indications are that the field is GREAT! It delivered a win in its first game! We noticed that the ball bounces with less rubber particles being thrown up from the field than expected! Once again, thanks to Dave of DTT for 'delivering' on time!
Opening Day made sweet with an Opening Win!
