Question of the Week.... Awareness...

Q: How do you teach awareness? Increasing awareness on the soccer field is designed to make soccer players think more quickly and be able to make better and faster decisions. It is important that players know what options they can have before they receive the soccer ball.

A: "Only the soccer player can make this happen. We as coaches, can show you, we can encourage you, and we can guide you, but you need to do it for yourself and make it happen. You must practice it “seriously” at every training session you have with your coach, otherwise those who do work hard could leave you behind!"

“We accept all the criticism and the constructive criticism [that] we received from members,” he said, adding that it’s equally important for clubs to be critical of themselves."

Thanks also to Goalie Coach Rolando for a very good session with Shinai tonight! She worked very hard on Monday!

2-2-0

These and 75 other photos from Saturday's nil-nil vs Gorge can be found HERE (if you can't access let the gaffer know....).

A couple of words on today's game. Were it not for some unlucky finishing and Cassy's (usual) strong goaltending we should have left with three points and not the sole point we earned today!
You were full credit for a win that was not to be. At least 7 chances to 1 for Gorge (Did they have one? Yes I think Aggy's kick from the right that ended with her injury was a solid opportunity for Gorge).

Our defenders were outstanding today! Kailyn, Melina shut down Jelly while Dani and Monique along with Hailey did very well as outside defenders!

Our midfielders anchored by Katie, along with Sarah, Emma, Mina, Morgan, Safahana, Alicia worked very well playing strong two way games! Natasha, Lindsay, Soleil, and Allie each played strong forward attacking soccer, we had some chances , came very close but could not get the ball past Cassy :(... next time! Credit to Shinai who had some wonderful punts, especially one in thefirst half that cleared the centre circle in the Gorge end! Excellent! She also played a few rolling balls out to the defenders, always good to mix it up! I thought our corners from Alicia and Kailyn were very good though it is frustrating that we were unable to bury some of those chances in the Gorge net!

We end the (regular) season against Gorge with a 2Wins, 2Draw and 0Loss record.

standings update...

Saanich Fusion are named league Winners, but they have fewer points than the Thunder..how is that possible... Only Rounds 1-3 are considered for the final standings to determine league winner. Fusion have 40 points to Thunders 37. Round 4 will not be complete.

UPDATED: March 4th

* Played, Win, Draw, Loss, Points

1 Fusion.....16 14 1 1 43 pts *league winners*
2 Thunder.19 16 1 2 49 *first team to reach 80 goals for*
3 Lakehill..18 9 4 5 31
4. Gorge....18 7 2 9 23
5. SS Stars.19 4 0 15 12
6. Cowichan.18 0 0 18 0

a better way to look at the standings is as a percentage of points earned versus possible points

1. Fusion 43/48 = 89.58%
2. Thunder 46/54 = 85.6%
3. Reds 31/54 = 57.4%
4. Gorge 23/54 = 42.59%
5. SaltSpring 12/57 = 21.05%
6. Cowichan = 0

Friday under the Braefoot Lights

Another interesting game for both teams. Before we dive into the game a huge THANK YOU to Coach Richard and the SaltSpring players for making the trek over to Braefoot Park on a rainy Friday afternoon to get this game in before the season shuts down. SaltSpring was able to 'play up' some of their u15 and u14 talent and they looked right at home! If only they had not lost some of their players at the winter break ...

The game itself got off to a very lackluster start, it took both teams a good 10-15 minutes to find their passes and to use the space. Most of the play was in the SaltSpring end but they did use their speed and short accurate passes to threaten our defense. Credit (as always) to a strong backline that kept the play well away from our stand-in keeper: Soleil.

With a few players sitting this game out and a few players back after a lengthy break we can explain some of the early miscues, but when we did look up and find our best options then the play looked pretty good! We had numerous corner kicks in the first half and got great distance on the corners but no finish. It was also nice to see some creativity and quick decision making such as the short corners we took. We finished the first half up 1-nil on a opportune goal credited to Mina! As the SaltSpring Coach was heard to say later in the game 'If you don't shoot you can't score!' Well done Mina!

The second half saw SaltSpring change their keeper and full credit to their 2nd half final defender as she made some very good saves including the stop on Natasha's break away..I am sure Natasha wishes she could retake that!

Our second goal came after a good stretch of play that resulted in a Sarah throw in on the left side of the field. Dani scored a beaut of a goal on a half volley shot! Well done!

We ended our scoring with what we believe was our first header, and it was a nice header from Sarah coming from a ball that was sent in from the right side by Morgan. As Coach Paul is often heard to say 'Great Stuff!'

With 15 minutes to play we suddenly found ourself with a very short bench as 4 players had to leave , made the coaches job easy as far as substitutions was concerned..there would be none!
Not really sure what happened to our defensive play as we did not track back when SaltSprings right footed forward Jazmine streaked down the right side and got a powerful shot away that eluded the outstretched hands of our keeper. Great shot, great goal. Final score 3-1 for the Reds!

The Gaffer wants to pay particular credit to the strong play of Sarah, Dani, Safahanna and Emma! Emma has been out of our lineup for much too long so it was great to see her out there on Friday night!

I am sure after Saturday's game on the Hampton Turf I'll be singing praise for all our players!

Merci Soleil!

Thanks for going in Goal on Friday evening!

Standings....

Sunday, February 19, 2012

Who is in this years LISA u16GG District Cup?

looking at the standings in Silver and Gold here is the list of teams that we believe will be playing on March 3rd...
  • Peninsula Thunder
  • Gorge
  • Saltspring has withdrawn
  • Cowichan
  • Saanich Fusion (Silver) - winners of the Silver division (all three rounds!)
  • Lakehill Reds.
Now we await the random draw, three teams will get a round 1 bye on March 3rd and enter the competition at the semis on March 10th !

Next Saturday Feb 25th will be the final weekend of scheduled league games. Possibly one extra game on March 3rd for the two teams not in the 1st round of district cup.

3 time LISA rep.....

With a deserved 2-0 win over the Thunder on Saturday at Lochside Turf the Saanich Fusion have booked their ticket to play the UISA rep in BOTH the Island B Cup and Island Champions finals!

The Fusion went ahead early on a well executed set play, something the Fusion are well known for! They held the Thunder off the score board in the first half! The Thunder never got past the midfield especially in the early going of the second half (that would change as we'll mention later...) when the Fusion were in control. With about 24 minutes remaining in the game an unfortunate accident in which a Thunder attacker earned what the official demed to be a yellow by pushing a Fusion defender head first into the Fusion goalie knocked the goalie to the ground with what could be a neck injury. Was this avoidable? Hard to say , the fact that the Thunder player came in with some speed and wanted the ball made a collision unavoidable. The defender attempted to shield so the keeper would get the ball. Was there a push? Yes, was it intentional? No. Just as Kristy's foul at the other end of the field was not intentional, she definitely pulled up from that challenge. So in the end, this was a physical game as we expect when we play these teams!

A long break ensued and and when action resumed Fusions excellent backup keeper Colleen took to protecting the CordovaBay/GH goal. Chances were exchanged and the Thunder put some nice passes together but failed to send the through balls down the channels for PSA's Christina to pounce onto. Fusions #20 SophiaK was absolutely superb as a rightback against Christina, the two of them had great 1v1 battles. The Gaffer never really noticed #20 before but sure took note of her during this game! Both teams had their share of free kicks with the Thunder having one glorious opportunity that Colleen sent against the crossbar and did excellent to keep from falling into her goal. Definitely the play of the game!! As expected #8, Alynn had another strong game for the Thunder!

In the end it was the Fusion who would be victorious and the Thunder would be sent to the District Cup for the first time...well... ever? At least not in the last two seasons! This will set up a very interesting District Cup starting March 3rd! Now the Fusion wait to see if Comox will be their (expected) opponent on March 3rd to determine who will book their ticket to the Provincial B Cup! Momentum certainly is with the Fusion! Comox plays their qualifier on Sunday vs Alberni. The last time those two teams met Comox won.

Week 19......

BC Cup: Fusion 2 - 0 Thunder
(for the right to play Comox)
*
League: Gorge v CVSA
(can CVSA repeat their BC Cup success?) not played?
*
League: SaltSpring 1 - 3 Lakehill Reds
(our game vs SaltSpring has officially been moved to Friday night Feb 24th at Braefoot Park)

Got a thought on the LISA transfer rule?

The Lakehill Club President is asking for input on what Lakehill's position should be going into the next round of discussion slated for Feb 21st, many of you will have received the LISA template, if you have not, then please contact Hannah's mother: Laura as she will roll up your thoughts for Derek to take forward.

Needless to say this topic is pretty important to our team if we want to be around next season for u17!! We really are hoping there will be more u17GG teams next year than there were this season!

UPDATE: The Presidents are looking at allowing 5 transfers, we are not sure if the +2 for u17/u18 will be permitted. We'll just have to wait till the May 15th LISA AGM to know more. Stay tuned...

Saturday, February 11, 2012
