Weekend review!

An interesting weekend with more than a few surprises! This season has seen very few interruptions, that was until last weekend's loss of round 16 due to all area fields being closed!
We went into this season knowing that three time Division winners: Peninsula Thunder would once again be 'the team to beat' and we also knew that the Saanich Fusion team had strengthened and would be very formidable! So far both teams have been difficult to play against!

This season (so far) pretty much has been a stratification of the u16GG table with three races developing: places 1v2, places 3v4 and place 5 over place 6. Not much has changed over the last 10 weeks! Saanich had managed to remain undefeated over 14 weeks of play. Depending on how LISA evaluates 'completed rounds', Fusion are set to add the Division Title (and a place in the Island Champions Final) to their lengthy list of accomplishments!

Up until this weekend Peninsula has pretty much dominated all their opponents with the notable exception of the Fusion. Up till this weekend that is! For many it came as a surprise to see that the Lochside and Tyndallers unable to score a goal! That is rare and a tribute to the excellent Blue Heron defenders! More than anything it shows that on any given weekend any team can be beaten! More than any other team we know just how good the Thunder are, I'll explain that in a moment. We've now had over 17 weeks of league scheduled play, and that means players are feeling the effects of illness, injuries and other commitments. It is not uncommon to have shortened benches (as we know only to well ourselves!).

Starting next weekend Coaches and Managers will be hoping that their rosters are healthy as district area "cup season" starts with B Cup qualifying! We did not draw into the opening round starting Feb 4th so we expect LISA to schedule us to play Peninsula. We should know the field by Wednesday at the latest.

The Thunder have been an extremely difficult team for us to play against. They have scored a combined 11 goals against us, all the other teams have managed 9 goals against us. It is not a Goals Against record we are too happy abou,t but I mention it to stress that for whatever reason the Thunder has dominated us more than any other team, to have any chance at hardware this season we need to cut down the Goals Against- starting next weekend!!

Which brings me to a couple of words about yesterday's Gorge game:

The score indicates we scored 4 goals...yes we scored 4... the Gorge goal was an unfortunate own goal but it highlighted how much we miss Dani in the midfield! It also highlights that for all the good play we had on Saturday we had a real let down that caused the lone Gorge goal! It comes as no surprise that Jelly was the spark in the Gorge offense! We did a solid job closing her down quickly for most of the first half! But what we observed was some momentary confusion as one Lakehill defender thought another was going to pick her up in the midfield, neither did! Jelly exploited the open space to attack and she got a decent shot away. We thwarted (kind of) that, but somehow sent the ball into our own goal with a deflection. Ok, 0-1 at the half, nothing to be too concerned about...except...for Cassy. Cassy is without a doubt the dominant u16GG goalie this season! Her positioning is excellent and she thwarted Lindsay on four occasions on Cassys left side. But...she can be beaten! We just were unable to do so on Saturday...so the fact that we scored 3 goals against Gorge , while positive it identifies an area we need to work on, especially our decision making inside the 18 yard box (ours and the opponents!).

With Gorge down a couple of players in the second half, despite our superiority in numbers. we lacked "finish". We did get some nice opportunities and had three nice goals by Morgan , Allie and Natasha! Alicia and Natasha came close on headers (one of which really should have gone in). But for many watching the game the highlight was the crisp passing and the use of width! All good! Other players took some decent shots: Katie, Natasha and Monique come to mind. Safahana, Mina, Soleil all contributed to our strong play! [I highlighted our defenders in a separate posting (see the Gorge photos!)]. Alicia and Kailyn took the majority of set pieces and while we did not capitalize on them we did have some good opportunities!

As we continue towards the next 6 weeks we will have another good run out tonight at 5:45pm on the Braefoot Turf! Then Tuesday,Wednesday & Thursday practices this week! See you all there!

above: Melina and Kailyn had very strong defensive games today! Along with Hailey, Hannah and Monique contributed to a well orchestrated back line especially when we had possession and opportunity to pass the ball around.
Lindsay had another excellent game and numerous 1st half chances but Cassy kept her off the scoreboard! Below: After a lengthy absence due to sickness Soleil made her return the day after being in Vancouver for the Olympic Qualifier, it must have been a good education as she strung a lot of passes together, shielded the ball well and had a shot!

With two weekends left till the start of B Cup qualifying play all eyes will be on the LISA office to eagerly await the cup schedule till we hear otherwise we proceed with the normal game schedule which lists the following as the start of Round 4. These game may or may not appear in the weekly standings but will not be part of the determination to decide the leagues final standings. However the importance of these games will not be lost on everyone as we prepare for February and March!

With no Gaffer at the field today it must have been a lot less noisy ;)
Congratulations to the entire team for a good finish to Round 3! Sounds like the defense was stellar and the team got some nice goals from Lindsay, Alicia (!) and a duo from Natasha! Coach Paul mentioned that the team hit the CVSA goal frames with blistering shots 4x! including one that left a rattling sound (well hit by Dani). Paul mentioned that the last 20 minutes was probably the best second half effort he has seen, very positive news! Really wish I had been there! Congrats to Shinai on the 'clean sheet'.

This weekend marks the end of round three also the beginning of games in the 2012 year! All teams will be looking to get "into form" before the upcoming B and District Cups starting in February ... just a few short weeks away!

According to reports reaching Braefoot Soccer Central: the Fusion scored a bakers bundle of goals, so we know it was a game the Stars will be eager to move on from...

Peninsula 2 - 0 Gorge

Gorge played well against the Fusion in their last game of the 2011 year but Peninsula appears to be unstopable, However: Cassy is among the best '96 Goalie in the city so.....we expect a tight game... As we wrote, with Cassy on her game Gorge will keep the scores close and are able to pull off an upset however in todayès game Peninsula had another of their defensively comfortable games and kept up with their winning ways as they march towards Cup season!

Anticipate that LISA will schedule a u16GG game for Feb 25th though it won't count towards the standings

Saltspring tried valiantly to get on the board vs the potent Thunder offense/defense and it looked like they had opportunities inside the opening 10 minutes but once the Thunder found their stride there was no looking back as the Stars from SaltSpring dropped a 0-5 on Saturday in a round 3 make up game, putting Thunder as the second u16GG team this season to reach 30+ points a full 10 points ahead of the Reds.

Gorge has yet to schedule their home game make up against Lakehill, while the other significant outstanding game of the Thunder v the Fusion may be scheduled for the new year... either way its going to take a significant stumble from the Lochsiders to prevent them from winning the division , something that has been the domain of the Thunder for the last three seasons!

A lot of community organizations are starting to think about how to reposition themselves for the changing demographics and realities of a very different sporting culture than what was to be found a mere 10 or 20 years ago. As a result some clubs are merging, which is nothing new, mergers have happened in the past to form Bays and more recently GHCB/Fusion.

In this era of social media and the importance society places on good governance and transparency (more than just posting monthly minutes online) clubs are often rebranding themselves. Lakehill undertook a branding exercise in 2008 when the new logo was introduced, this season saw the introduction of new uniforms that maintained our traditional look and brought back the red shorts.

The recent merger of three mainland clubs in West-Van to form VanUnited (or VanU) shows the importance of good web sites and communications...look here .

*UPDATE* Soccer America released their latest 2011 list of top US Girls clubs HERE

SoccerAmerica'S 2010 list included 9 clubs from California, 6 from Texas and only one from Washington State: not surprisingly it is Crossfire of Seattle! Crossfire used to play in the SuperY league up till 3 seasons ago but now play in the PremierDevelopmentLeague. EMS plays against some Crossfire 'select' teams in the Spring tourneys in Bellingham. Shinai, Monique, Natasha and others played against a Crossfire team last Spring. Crossfire is unlike any organization up here and player fees of $4k+ are the norm. (Crossfire comes in at #28 in 2011)

A 'must read' especially for those with University Soccer aspirations!

there are two very important quotes in this article worth repeating here:

“To coach men, you’ve got to dominate them, drive them with the intensity of your personality and walking up and down the sidelines burying them always seems to work. I always wanted to rail against my women the same way. But while it made me feel good, I learned they weren’t going to hear a thing. I could vent my spleen and have a heart attack but it’s not going to make them better players. You don’t drive women, you lead them, and you don’t lead them effectively through intimidation. You relate to them personally. You lead them by caring about them. Women have to understand that your relationship with them is never in jeopardy.”

Furthermore, it’s important to understand that there is no professional soccer career awaiting these young female players – very very few anyway compared to the male side of the game. Girls are playing soccer presumably because they enjoy it. Furthermore, it’s always been our belief at TSS that if girls develop their abilities in the game, their enjoyment in the game will only grow.For some players, their abilities may allow them to play for a college varsity team. Some players may even receive a modest financial contribution towards their Canadian university tuition. Yes, that’s right – modest.

There is no such thing as a full-ride scholarship to a Canadian public university. The most a player will receive is $5000 a year towards their tuition. In most cases, players receive about $2000 a year. Now do the math of how much money you have contributed towards your daughter’s soccer since she began playing.

After the Saanich Peninsula squad scored an unprecidented 17 goals last weekend we fear the worst for the visitors

The Gorge have been playing some good football of late and are undefeated in their last two weekends... but the Fusion are hitting their stride so we have to think it will be the home team that extends their undefeated streak to an amazing 13 games!

Despite having to rest players due to "wear and tear", the Fusion just has too much quality to expect anything less than a full three points from this game.

Reports reaching Braefoot Soccer Centre are that the score was 3-nil within 5 minutes..not much Cowichan could do to contain the only undefeated team in the u16 Gold division.

everyone should read FIFA Law 14.... the referee would be RIGHT to whistle the play on the premise that the game had extended past the regulation 40 minutes. But the Penalty was awarded within the 40 minutes. The penalty kick occurred at 40min mark so refs discretion.... (Law 5)

At last weeks team party players and their supports brought a lot of really good deserts! We have had numerous requests for Rebecca's Recipe... here you go... please share! :)

Makes about 50 caramels

The seeds of a vanilla bean add complexity to the flavor of the caramels. While this recipe uses only the seeds, don’t discard the pod: The flavor-rich casing can be used to flavor sugar, simple syrup, or cocoa.

1 vanilla bean
1 cup heavy cream
5 tablespoons unsalted butter, cut into ¼-inch chunks
1½ teaspoons fleur de sel (or smoked sea salt)
1⅓ cups (9⅓ ounces) sugar
¼ cup light corn syrup
¼ cup water

1. Cut vanilla bean in half lengthwise. Using tip of paring knife, scrape out seeds. Combine vanilla bean seeds, cream, butter, and 1 teaspoon fleur de sel in small saucepan over medium heat. Bring to boil, cover, remove from heat, and steep for 10 minutes. Meanwhile, line 8-inch square baking pan with parchment paper coated with vegetable oil spray; set aside.

2. Combine sugar, corn syrup, and water in large saucepan over high heat. Bring to boil, frequently swirling pan (do not stir) until mixture is amber colored and registers 350 degrees on candy thermometer. Remove from heat and carefully stir in cream mixture (mixture will foam up). Return mixture to stovetop, reduce heat to medium-high, and cook, stirring frequently, until caramel reaches 248 degrees on candy thermometer, 3 to 5 minutes.

3. Carefully transfer caramel to prepared baking pan. Using rubber spatula, smooth surface of caramel, and then let cool for 10 minutes. Sprinkle with remaining ½ teaspoon salt, and then let cool to room temperature, about 2 hours. Cut caramel into ¾-inch pieces and individually wrap pieces in wax paper squares, twisting ends of paper to close. Serve.

Of all the weekly u16GG matchups this is the most balanced! All 6 teams in the u16GG standings are playing their nearest rivals and upsets can not be discounted!

Cowichan 0 - 3 Saltspring

Cowichan continues to struggle and SaltSpring has had their number in their previous encounters and yet we dont think this game is a forgone conclusion, it will likely be a one goal game because we think Cowichan will put up a defensive wall in their end. SaltSpring does have the ability to control the midfield and use their speed on the left. Cowichan has more speed on their right! Should be entertaining! predictor: 1-2 SS

Thunder 0 - 2 Fusion

Looking at the standings the gaffer would be inclined to say that the Fusion have all but wrapped up the league title.... or have they? Remember that the Thunder have more games unplayed, as a result it is safe to say that this is the game that will determine the league title! Fusion are expected to be back to full strength after missing three key players last weekend. We think this will be another game played at a fernetic pace, and once again, will be decided by who makes the least mistakes. Having seen both teams we have to say if it comes to set pieces, especially corners, then the Thunder had better get the ball out of their end first time!! We were very impressed with the Fusions set pieces! The Thunder have the stingiest defense so it is unlikely this will be a repeat of their last encounter which saw 5 goals being scored! Let's just hope the Blue Heron field is open, with all the recent rain there is a chance this game will be delayed! predictor: 1-1 draw... This game has been moved to Iroquois field....

Fusion won to effectively clinch the division title!

Gorge 2- 2 Lakehill

Gorge and Lakehill is another interesting matchup. Looking at the recent encounters the Red stripes have come away with the points (with one notable exception we'd rather not talk about(HERE) !), but this weekend could be different ! The Reds need to play a complete 80 minute game! Indications are this match will be on the ecole Brodeur grass field in Esquimalt (on Head Street), we are familiar with that field!. This will very likely be a one goal game... the girls know what they have to do!

Natasha's lovely breakaway goal was NOT offside... !!

.... did Gorge deserve to get points out of this game? YES they did! They played well getting to the balls quicker than we did! The Gaffer must say that Melina was fantastic defensively!.. Kailyn, Hailey and Monique did well. Our midfield kinda was not able to control the game we certainly missed LC and KC today. Credit to Monique for her two Penalty goals and credit to player of the match: Kelsey from the u14GS team who had a very good game in Goal, making one brilliant diving save! She was kept busy by Gorge who had more of the ball in our end than we did in their end! Thank you very much Kelsey!.. Next week Peninsula at ????

With rounds 1 and 2 being "incomplete" that means we are likely entering into the final round that will count in the final standings. The Fusion have a clear lead towards earning a bearth in the season end Island Championship game vs Comox. In theory, the Lochsiders could still be caught, a lot depends on how the top 4 teams do in this round! Subtle words for: it is up to us to earn some points in those tough games, starting this weekend vs the Fusion!

Both teams will want to earn some points, the Reds will need to get a complete game out of all their players and keep the distance between themselves and their checks as tight as possible. The team that is 'first to the ball' will earn the rewards, and we all know how fast the Fusion are...
First of all the Gaffer apologizes for being overly vocal , there is something about playing Fusion that results in way too much barking from him, sorry about that, the good news is we know you all have tuned him out long ago ;)

Second and more important we hope that our Captain will not be out of action for a long time, based on how she fell and the resulting twist we can only hope it is not a lengthy absence!

Thirdly and more to the game: the score flatters our efforts today. The Fusion had the better of the play, they had excellent set pieces and those two headers off of corners = impressive .. As for our play: we had two opportunities and the ball raced ahead of us. No breaks today. Defensively we were ok. We were very impressed with those players who made efforts to head the ball...well done! The middle of the Tyndall field was very packed today which probably resulted in why both defenses played a form of kick-away. Not a lot of bad play just not a lot for the highlight reel. See you Monday....

Of all the scheduled games we think this one will be the hardest to predict. Gorge has excellent goaltending and crafty forwards. If CVSA is at full strength we think they may be able to get a draw out of this game! maybe....

The Gaffer did not take a lot of photos on Saturday during the Reds' 5-nil win over a shorthanded CVSA team due to the cold and rain (a common theme during all the 2:15pm games!) The few photos that were taken can be found HERE (sorry about the poor quality)

As for today's goals, Coach Paul made these observations...

There were many missed opportunities!

The game itself can best be described as another game of two halves. To be honest we were disorganized in the first 40 minutes, the play was patchy, we took shots, made some passes but our finishing and quality were both lacking. Coach Paul challenged the players at the half time talk to put what they continue to learn during practices to use and work on the short game, heads up play, constant movement and communication. We can`t stress enough that `going forward is not always your only option`! During the second half we saw wonderful give and goes , playing the ball down the channels... and better control...

The 2nd half passing was definitely better and as a result the goals we scored came out of opportunities which were created - good effort!

Next weekend we face another big game as we travel for the first time to play on the Tyndall Turf vs the Fusion. See you all at Monday`s practice!

How do these stats compare to u17/u18GG this season?

Answer: no comparison at all, the dominance in u16 by PSA and SFFC is unparalleled in u17/u18. There have (already) been a total of 11 shutouts (including a 0-0 score) in u17/u18GG, while at u16GG there have already been 19 shutouts (and no 0-0 score!). In u16GG there have been only two draws (both involving Lakehill) while in u17/u18 there have been 4 draws.

Why is that? is it because of no HPL at u16 while there is HPL at u17/u18? Comment: No one can draw any conclusions to answer the question, as there is a similar number of u16GG eligible players who are not playing in u16GG as there are u17/u18s not playing in LISA league. Highlanders Prospects and LISA u17 are both avenues that have about 12-18 u16s playing and there are also u16GGs playing in u17GG. At u17/u18 the number of players training and playing with HPL, Highlanders and Womens teams are closer to 20-25 players.

Lakehill Reds 2 - 0 Saltspring Stars

Well done Lakehill Reds - a deserved 2- nil vs SaltSpring with goals by Alicia (from 35 yards out) and a nice effort by Lindsay as she snuck behind the SSS defense and slotted in the insurance goal! We had much of the play today and exhibited a lot of goodness in the middle of the field with sharp ball movement...good stuff!
Natasha and Katie were robbed of goals (they are coming...). Important work by our defense today, solid work by Melina, Monique, Katie, Hailey, Kailyn,Morgan and Hannah. Probably our best midfield effort in the last 3 weeks thanks to Lindsay, Katie, Emma, Soleil, Dani, Alicia,Sarah.... Am I missing anyone?
Dani was the POTM (player of the match) with a solid effort today. In fact if we could, we'd give POTM to all the players today!

Special thanks to Shinai who made a very important second half save at a critical time with SaltSpring getting a few forays into our end...

Nov 5- Round 2

When these six teams last played their scheduled opponents on October 1st the home teams all managed shutouts, we'll see if that changes this weekend! SaltSpring, Lakehill and Cowichan are all coming off of losses last weekend and are looking to add to their respective "win column" stats!

We think the match of the week will be at GISS school where the Lakehill Reds have never played! SaltSpring is looking to bounce back after a disappointing performance vs Gorge.

Speaking of Gorge they seem to have found a spark with Cassy's stellar goaltending and a pair of Jelly goals from last weekend but they are playing against the only undefeated team [who with or without a player] are still capable of slipping balls behind the best defenses and past any keeper!

The Sidney Thunder are likely to replicate the Fusion's result after they had a convincing display against the Reds last weekend at Blue Heron. We don't think the standings will change at the top, but the battle for third continues with Lakehill and Gorge needing points! Will Becky and the SaltSpring 'Stars' deny the Reds on Saturday at GISS school? Stay tuned....

The third game of round 2 should see a few changes in the standings as both the Thunder and the Fusion continue their race to 40 points and the league title and a bearth in the Island Champions Cup, the Reds could impact that race with a solid effort in Sidney on Saturday...

Gorge 2- 0 SaltSpring
Predictor says: 1-1, If Cassy is in Goal and Jelly get the shots on net this could be 2-1 win for Gorge! SaltSpring may be a bit rusty having played fewer games than Gorge in recent weeks but they are coming off of a convincing 3-nil victory, should be a good game on the Gorge Hampton Grass field!.

Peninsula Thunder 4 - 0 Lakehill Reds
Predictor: hopes for a 1-nil ;) we wont say for who - but you can guess! Coming off of last weekends heart stopping 100 km/h pace vs the Fusion and playing on their BlueHeron#1 field the Thunder will be really hard to stop, they have a great defense, fast forwards and excellent team work ethic. Their advantage is their strong midfield.

Team Reds will have to play with a lot of intensity for 80 minutes and have their best ever 2nd half to get points from this game! After last nights excellent practice we know the Reds are capable....

Predictor says ...sorry, Fusion will run away with this 4-nil (or more). The Fusion just are too fast and pass too well for Cowichan to contain them. Last time these two played the CVSA keeper 'stood on her head' and only allowed 2 balls to touch the inside netting. Coming off of their 3-2 win vs the Thunder, the Fusion have set the pace for the remainder of the season and will be looking to add to their division leading points tally

why is it even a question? There was no treat to our u16GG game today vs a well tuned PSA Thunder!

The Gaffer thinks that was likely our worst ever result vs PSA and that's not the most disappointing part of today's game! Why so negative you ask? Well, we know you all are better players than we witnessed today, and capable of "playing a team game" - and we acknowledge it's a long process to make a team that will do well once cup play comes along! This is why attendance at practices and having the right worth ethic in your game preparation is so important!

So lets review ..not that we need or even want to... first goal came off
a PSA set piece, easy tap in for their forward. We could discuss this but let's ask ourselves why did we gift PSA a corner kick when it was unnecessary to do so? Simple answer: If the Goalie calls for the ball you have to have trust in your keeper to get the ball. We did not defend well and the result was a corner that led to a goal!

1-nil at the half for the hosts. Normally that's not too bad. We had a few chances. Our #4 had excellent runs down the wing and tracked back to defend all up and down the wing. #6, #13, #17 all offered up pressure on the PSA defenses- others did as well - but not enough in the Gaffers opinion. Something we will continue to work on.

Biggest issue we observed remains in the middle of the field, we did not exhibit much composure today, all to often hectic decisions that led to giving up possession. Something that we just can not do against a team like PSA or SFFC (or anyone for that matter!).

Second half was our least inviting half of the season! We gave up three soft goals. I don't mean to be unfair to PSA, they deserved their goals, they earned them, but we made them far to easy to score.

So trick or treat? We did not earn any treats today...but luckily we have a game to redeem ourselves next weekend on Salt Spring island. Then after that we play the Fusion again, so, please come to practice and work hard and put this game behind us! PRACTICES:

Oct 22 - three very interesting match-ups all are very even contests and could yield some draws but we doubt many surprises...or?!

SaltSpring 3 - 0 CVSA
Home field advantage to SaltSpring as much as we would like the CVSA team to get some points on the board! (predictor says: 1-nil SS), despite facing a number of injuries SS came ahead by 2 more than we predicted thanks to their speedy forwards!

Fusion 3 - 2 Peninsula *Match of the Week*
This will be the first official match up for these two excellent teams, we think it will be decided by just one goal, if a goal is scored! Should be a 'cracker' of a game! Obviously, writing as the Lakehill Gaffer, we would welcome a draw!!! (predictor says: 1-1 or 0-0 but we think both teams will disagree and someone may be the clear winner...!?! Despite missing two PKs the Fusion came out the winners in what one reporter called a VERY physical game.... with the win the Fusion are clearly in the lead in the u16GG division!

Lakehill Reds 2 - 0 Gorge

Definitely a game of two halves! First half we played soccer, passes, movement, possession...nice stuff! But the second half... well the Gaffer wasn't sure what was happening there, we made a lot of blind passes, turn overs and just played the way Gorge was..kick and run. Must say both keepers were strong, we took a lot of shots on the Gorge goal but Cassy is too good a goalie to let a soft goal in.Shinai was back in the net and did not have to make her finger tip saves but she certainly had more work in the second half than she deserved! Katie's two goals were nice... first one was a well taken free kick inside the Gorge 6 following a pass back foul that gave us the lead, as mentioned the second half was not fun to watch way too much of the play in our end of the field, credit to our defenders [Mel, Monique, Dani, Hailey, Kailyn] who kept Jelly off the score board and she had three solid opportunities)!! At the other end I forgot to mention the 1st half Post that thwarted Natasha. Alicia had a number of excellent passes. Alicia had one memorable shot on goal, it's coming ...it's coming! Monique also had two hard shots on Cassy but from distance and Cassy usually sees those coming! Allie, Hannah, Morgan, Sarah, Safahanna, Emma, Lindsay all worked hard in the middle of the field. Emma and Safahanna tried a number of give and goes on the wing...good stuff! Mina had a memorable pass and a well weighted ball and did a lot of the work that resulted in Katie's brilliant second half goal. Probably the nicest of her goals so far!

But as the fans proclaimed: the Player of the Match was without a doubt MELINA! Well done Mel! (now we need to get more photos of Mel! next week in Sidney?)

Fusion stay on top despite gutsy effort from Dragons!

The Lakehill u16 Gold Boys were playing GHCB/SF on the upper field during our Saturday game on the middle field, they fell behind then tied it up only to see it slip away...really too bad! they play in a 4 team division so both teams play each other LOTS!

Week 6 review

Oct 15th sees the flip of the 1st round with:

Peninsula -not played- SaltSpring (r1: 8-nil)
SaltSpring could not field a full team so the Thunder had a 'bye' and a weekend to rest up before their huge first encounter vs the Fusion next weekend!

Lakehill 2 - 2 Fusion (r1: 0-4)
Another "battle royale" between these two teams. It's always a match in which the Gaffer can't sit still! Lakehill became the first team to score on the Fusion this season and not only once but twice! But the Fusion showed their quality by roaring back and scoring to keep their undefeated record!
Gorge 1 - 0 CVSA (r1: 4-1)
Despite playing without one of their disciplined players the Gorge proved to be 'one better' than a fiesty Cowichan team that could not even the match! With the win Gorge goes up on the reds by one point and sets up an important match next week at Lakehill!

A really nice sunny day, a green field and two teams that are on the ascendancy set up what promised to be a great game! The Fusion with their perfect record , zero goals against and uptempo style were going downhill to start and had multiple forays into the Lakehill end. The reds defended well and took the play into the Fusion end and probed the otherwise stellar GHCB/SF defense. Lakehill caught the Fusion a bit off guard by striking first on a play that evolved out of the corner of the Fusion 6 after a set piece, the pass went to Katie who touched the ball as she turned looked up and shot an accurate 'final pass' into the back of the Fusion net---GOOOOAAAALLLL! The Fusion continued their attacks with their quick passing style which was described by one Lakehill fan as" 'PASS-PASS-BOOM'. The Reds defended well, Melina was 'on her game' and stopped SFs' Colleen's ever present threats towards the Lakehill goal. And when Colleen was off the field you knew that SF's Natasha would be on the field! As could be expected the Fusion got even and looked to go ahead where it not for a terrific run by Katie who took a ball from the top of the Fusion 18 and seemingly effortlessly ran into the Fusion 6 and sent a well cued up game ball into the far side of the Fusion net! For a second time the Reds had the lead!

The Gaffer (who was too tense to stay near the bench) took in the first half from the fan's vantage point at the parking lot, chatting with our Peninsula reporter who took in the game. The Thunders' fan observed that Lakehill was giving the Fusion a good game and maybe (just maybe) would pull this one out! But we were only at the 30 minute mark of the first half, still plenty of time for both teams to take control of the game! Some 5 minutes later with the play in the Lakehill end the Fusion got a great shot on the Lakehill goal which was brilliantly stopped by Soleil , however as Soleil went for the rebound, a Reds defender attempted to clear the ball and it was intercepted by a Fusion player who scored to even the game and the first half!

The second half went scoreless and both teams seemed to be drained. The Fusion had a strange spell of 7 consecutive Lakehill throw ins in which the Fusion would just punch the ball out the touch line, the play walked down the line towards the Fusion 10 yard line setting up what was Lakehills best chance of the second half: a free kick to the right of the Fusion keeper. Hannah was tasked with the kick and being able to take it with either foot she elected for a right footed in-swinger (great decision), unfortunately for Lakehill we could not finish this opportunity. The Fusion stormed into the Lakehill on numerous occasions and on one of their forays played the ball to the top of the Lakehill 18 and a nasty 1v1 ensued between the Lakehill keeper and a Fusion attacker The Lakehill keeper clearly had the ball under control but the pace was too much for the Fusion player who could not pull up and instead went knee first into the keepers ribs and a long break ensued till the keeper was able to get back up on her legs!

With the clock running down the Fusion continued to play with their characteristic intensity but Lakehill defended well and sent the ball into their opponents end, the clock ran down it was to be the Reds' second draw of the season. The Gaffer and many observers left the field feeling 'great we took points off the Fusion' at the same time we acknowledge the Fusion are a great team, their next game vs Peninsula will likely decide the league standings despite being only week 7!! Peninsula who have won the league 3 years in a row will be pumped for the game....
